Keming's core transformer product lines are purpose-built for the demanding power requirements of high-speed railway traction systems, station facilities, and auxiliary power networks.
Industry Insight
A step-down transformer is a critical electrical device that reduces high transmission voltages to lower, usable levels required by railway traction systems, station infrastructure, and onboard equipment. In high-speed rail environments—where operational reliability and safety margins are non-negotiable—these transformers serve as the backbone of the entire power supply chain.
High-speed railways typically receive power from the national grid at 110kV, 220kV, or even 500kV. Step-down transformers at traction substations convert this to 27.5kV (single-phase) or 25kV for catenary systems, and further reduce to 380V/220V for station facilities, signaling, lighting, and HVAC. Without precision step-down transformers, safe train operation at speeds exceeding 350 km/h would be impossible.
The global high-speed railway market is experiencing unprecedented expansion. According to industry reports, the worldwide HSR network exceeded 58,000 kilometers by 2024, with China alone accounting for over 45,000 km—the largest in the world. This explosive growth has created massive demand for specialized power infrastructure, particularly step-down transformers designed to meet the unique technical and safety requirements of rail traction systems.
The global railway transformer market was valued at approximately USD 3.8 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 6.2 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of around 7.2%. Asia-Pacific dominates this market, driven by China's Belt and Road Initiative, India's expanding rail electrification programs, and Southeast Asia's emerging high-speed corridor projects. Europe remains a mature market with strong demand for transformer upgrades and replacements in aging infrastructure.
Key commercial drivers include:
High-speed railways impose far more demanding requirements on power infrastructure than conventional rail or industrial applications. Trains operating at 300–350+ km/h draw large, rapidly fluctuating loads—sometimes in the range of 10–25 MVA per train set. This creates significant challenges including voltage fluctuations, harmonic distortion, and reactive power imbalances that standard transformers are not designed to handle.
Railway-grade step-down transformers must comply with IEC 60076, EN 50329, and national railway standards such as China's TB/T series. They are required to maintain continuous operation under fault conditions, withstand short-circuit forces, and perform reliably across temperature ranges from -40°C to +60°C in outdoor installations. Keming's transformers are engineered and certified to meet these rigorous benchmarks.
The most power-intensive application is the traction substation, where large-capacity step-down transformers (typically 25–63 MVA) convert grid voltage to the 2×25kV autotransformer (AT) system or the conventional 25kV booster transformer (BT) system. The AT system, now preferred for new HSR lines, uses Scott or V/V connection traction transformers to minimize negative-sequence current injection into the grid—a key advantage of modern designs.
Major HSR stations such as Beijing South, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Guangzhou South each consume tens of megawatts of electricity for escalators, elevators, platform screen doors, HVAC, lighting, and digital information systems. Dry-type step-down transformers (SCB series) are the preferred choice for indoor station applications due to their fire-resistant, maintenance-free characteristics and compact footprint.
CTCS (Chinese Train Control System) and ETCS (European Train Control System) require ultra-stable, uninterrupted power. Dedicated step-down transformers with tight voltage regulation (±2% or better) feed UPS systems and rectifiers that power trackside beacons, axle counters, interlocking systems, and GSM-R/5G communication equipment. Any power interruption here has direct safety implications.
High-speed train maintenance depots require heavy-duty power for wheel lathes, lifting jacks, washing systems, and diagnostic equipment. Industrial-grade oil-immersed step-down transformers (S11-M series) provide robust, long-life power supply for these 24/7 operational facilities.
Modern EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) train sets incorporate onboard auxiliary transformers that step down the 25kV catenary voltage to power onboard systems including air conditioning, lighting, passenger information displays, and battery charging. These require ultra-compact, lightweight, and vibration-resistant designs—a growing area of innovation for transformer manufacturers.
Application Scenarios
From traction substations to onboard systems, Keming step-down transformers deliver reliable power across every critical node of high-speed railway infrastructure.
High-capacity step-down transformers convert 110kV–500kV grid power to 25kV catenary voltage, enabling continuous traction power for trains running at 300+ km/h with dynamic load management.
SCB dry-type transformers supply clean, stable 380V/220V power for station HVAC, escalators, lighting, ticketing systems, and passenger information displays in fire-safe, compact installations.

Redundant step-down transformer configurations with automatic switchover ensure uninterrupted power to safety-critical systems during grid faults or planned maintenance windows.
Advanced step-down transformers interface solar PV and wind generation with railway power networks, supporting green rail initiatives and reducing operational carbon footprint.
Industry Trends
The railway transformer industry is undergoing rapid technological evolution driven by digitalization, sustainability mandates, and the push for higher operational efficiency.
Next-generation railway transformers integrate real-time monitoring sensors for temperature, partial discharge, dissolved gas analysis (DGA), and load profiling. IoT connectivity enables predictive maintenance, reducing unplanned outages and extending asset life.
Amorphous alloy core transformers and high-grade silicon steel are replacing conventional designs, delivering up to 70% reduction in no-load losses. This aligns with global railway operators' net-zero carbon commitments and EU Ecodesign regulations.
Solid-state transformers (SST) using SiC and GaN power semiconductors are emerging for onboard and wayside applications, offering dramatic size/weight reductions, bidirectional power flow, and advanced power quality control—key for next-gen HSR.
Step-down transformers are increasingly paired with trackside battery energy storage systems (BESS) to capture regenerative braking energy from decelerating trains, improving overall system efficiency by up to 30%.
